Eric J. Wahl, age 64, of Eau Claire passed away unexpectedly Saturday April 7, 2007 at Luther Hospital from natural causes. 
 
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Thursday April 12, 2007 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 310 Broadway St., Eau Claire, WI 54703. The Rev. Dr. Mark X. Pirazzini officiating. Private family committal services will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire prior to services. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 4-8 pm at Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home, 3209 Rudolph Rd., Eau Claire, WI 54701. There will be no visitation prior to services on Thursday morning at the church. 

 
Eric was born June 14, 1942 in Saint Johns Michigan to the late Dr. George E. Wahl and Kathryn M. Wahl of Eau Claire. He grew up and attended school in Eau Claire graduating from Memorial High School in 1960. The following year he received the honorary degree of Chevalier in DeMolay. He attended college at the University of Wisconsin Madison where he graduated in 1964 with a degree in history. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin Madison Law School and graduated with his Juris Doctor in 1967. In 1967 he began his lifelong dedication to public service by becoming a special agent with the FBI and in 1971 he graduated from George Washington University in Washington D.C. with his Masters of Law (LLM). In 1971 he became an Assistant United States Attorney and served in that role until he entered the private practice of law in 1974. From 1976 to 1988 he was a Partner at Wahl and Wahl and from 1988-1993 he was a shareholder with Wiley, Wahl, Colbert, Norseng, Cray, and Herrell, S.C. While practicing law he served on the Eau Claire City Council and was elected President in 1978. During this time he also taught business law at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. He was elected Judge in Eau Claire County in 1993 and proudly served as Circuit Court Judge, Branch 2 until his death. He also took great pride in serving as President of the Wisconsin Board of Bar of Examiners. At the conclusion of his term as President he continued to serve on the Board of Bar Examiners. 
 
Judge Wahl's other professional service includes: Past President, Eau Claire County Bar Association; Member, State Bar Board of Governors; Special Counsel, Wisconsin Supreme Court, Board of Professional Responsibility; Chair, Wisconsin Mediation System and Medical Malpractice Panel; Arbitrator, American Arbitration Association. 
 
Other contributions Judge Wahl made to the community include: volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of America, Eau Claire Public Education Foundation Board of Directors, Sacred Heart Hospital Advisory Board, and Board President Eau Claire Golf and Country Club. 
 
In addition to his devotion to the law and his profession his sense of humor, telling stories, making people laugh, and love of family were his passions. His kind, loving heart and generous spirit were evident in every word and deed. He loved being surrounded by family and friends and nothing gave him more pleasure than baking a warm loaf of bread and preparing a wonderful meal to enjoy with those he loved. He was a passionate reader and precise writer with a love of the English language. His home was his haven and it was never without fresh flowers, music and piles of books. In addition, he enjoyed nature through fishing, golf, and caring for birds and wildlife. 
 
He is survived by Bette (Mencel) his high school sweetheart and wife of 42 years, sons Matthew (Cynthia) Wahl of Louisville, Tennessee, and Dr. Carter E. Wahl of San Diego, daughter Kathryn E. Wahl of Eau Claire, sister Betsey (Robert) McCrory of Pittsford, NY; brothers Edward (Jenny) Wahl of Minneapolis, MN; Carl (Patti) Wahl of Plymouth MN; Aunt Janice (Omer) Gunem of Eau Claire; Aunt Thelma (Jerry) Osman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Uncle Howard Elliott of Eau Claire.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George E. Wahl and Kathryn M. Wahl, sister Kathleen (Dennis) Olson, and aunt Eileen Elliott.
